Sex and the City talks Glossybox

As beauty bloggers we are always looking for the the next big thing; a new foundation, the best hair oil and hottest nail polish colour. Glossybox aims to give us what we crave but I couldn’t help but wonder – can we get everything we want from a monthly beauty box?

Charlotte: (looking enthusiastic): Sooo has everyone opened their Glossyboxes this month?

Carrie: Yeah I opened it,  I thought it was too small to contain any shoes…..

Samantha: You know that new intern I told you about…..well he’s coming around tonite – I’m hoping he’ll gloss my box.

Charlotte: (tapping her glass of orange juice with a butter knife) Hello, hello we’re talking about makeup here not your, your box (points to Samantha with the butter knife).

(Charlotte pauses then perks up) I think it’s wonderful getting a pretty bo… err package delivered every month. It’s so nicely wrapped and I can take time my time to try new things.

Miranda: I can’t believe I’m actually agreeing with Charlotte but I really like it too. I like that someone delivers a box of products to my office that I can look at in my own time. I like that I don’t have to deal with any skinny, 20 something sales girls at Bloomingdale’s that make me feel like shit because I don’t have time to blow dry my hair.

Charlotte: (looking hopeful) What about you Carrie didn’t you like the products in this month’s box?

Carrie: Well I guess it’s okay for people who are pressed for time – but I like the thrill of the chase. You know discovering those little beauty boutiques off the beaten path or finding that favourite mascara you thought was discontinued in the bargain bin at DuaneReade.

Charlotte: Well what about you Samantha – you love beauty products!

Samantha: No honey the only thing I love is me, besides I work in PR and I can get this stuff for free….

Miranda: (Interrupts as she’s cutting her food) Oh Really? Or does it depend on who’s glossing your box? (Samantha tips her glass to Miranda).

I was sent the April Glossybox to review and while I think it’s a brilliant idea and nicely presented I don’t think it’s for everyone. Glossybox is great for my friend Christine, who like Miranda has a high flying city job and doesn’t have time to go to the makeup counter at lunchtime – but still wants to look good. I consider myself a Carrie, I enjoy hunting and gathering my beauty finds (albeit on the internet) so having products delivered to my door once a month takes all the fun out of it.

So what are you when it comes to beauty boxes – A Miranda or a Carrie?

This made me laugh so much (and I never really got into SATC!). I bought 1 GlossyBox because Charlie (LadyoftheLane) did a review and it contained a Stila eyeliner in a colour which really caught my eye. I bought and cancelled my subscription at the same time. I have far too much stuff that I buy myself without the hassle of having to try products where the initial selection has been made by someone else. Great post. Thankyou xx

Your welcome Jan, I know exactly what you mean about a selection made by someone else. No matter how much info you give them it will never be right. It’s kind of like birthday and Christmas presents! :D

I loved the dialogue you did there! It made me laugh so much! :) I unsubbed from my beauty boxes because it was getting too expensive for these little surprises coming through the door which were nice to start with but the fun of it soon disappeared when I had boxes that had products that weren’t quite my cup of tea. I think I prefer finding my own products! xx

Well beauty bloggers always have their finger on the pulse of what’s hot and what’s not. I know I definitely have learned about new products from reading beauty blogs – bought some Mythical Oil yesterday because I read about it on someone’s blog……..mmm I wonder who it could be! :D

Darling, you NAILED it. Really, it made me laugh for the very first time today (which sounds rather sad, but it’s not). And kudos for getting each of the characters so spot on. *applause*

When it comes to beauty boxes, I’ve always thought they seemed slightly interesting, but just not “me”. In one way, I’m definitely a Mirianda, as it would be great to have things delivered to my apartment. Still, I’m just so extremely picky, and I also feel like I just don’t need any more stuff right now. I guess when my head is a bit messy, gathering more mess outside it just feels a bit unnecessary, if you know what I mean?

I totally know what you mean! I think i would have to not own much stuff to then be happy receiving these very nicely wrapped boxes full of more stuff.

Thanks for the compliments too bad I can’t do a Phd in SATC I think I’d do rather well! xoxo

Absolute genius with this post but you make a very good point. For people too busy to go shopping, this may be what they need but there are others like myself who love the thrill of going to the beauty counter, dabbling around with make-up and playing dress up!

Well my colleague at work said it was a good idea for her daughters as she never knows what to buy them so I think it would make a good gift for people who have everything.

I like playing dress up too! :D

I loved this post! I don’t love the thrill of the chase, I’m all about researching before I invest! I did like the surprise but more often than not I was disappointed and would much rather put the money towards one think I really want rather than 5 things I don’t need.

An organised beauty shopper – I’m in awe. I’m too much of a magpie, get distracted by bright shiny things but I have been more organised with the my USA expedition this time making lists and everything……. xoxo
