EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT: According to the Daily Fail there is a disturbing new trend for people to wash only a few times a week! Whilst this isn’t ground breaking news I got to thinking how important is my daily shower?
Americans vs. Europeans
When I first moved to the UK 17 years ago, I was living in halls of residence whilst on my HND course at the London College of Fashion. I used to get laughed at from my fellow floor mates with the amount of stuff I used to take into the shower. I had a plastic basket that contained the usual suspects like shampoo & conditioner, face wash, and shower gel but then I also had all my scrubs and moisturisers. As I got to know the other girls and guys on the floor they used to congregate in my room to look at all my bathing stuff with amazement.
There has always been a long-standing joke amongst Americans that Europeans don’t shower that often nor do the women shave their legs and armpits. Whilst I didn’t see that any of the girls looked like Chewbacca, I did realise they didn’t shower as often as me. While I’m not religious I think the daily shower comes from a Puritan belief of ‘Cleanliness is Next to Godliness’. As America was settled by a few thousand Puritans it might be the reason we are so obsessed with the frequent wash.
Showering in the morning is the same as having a cup of coffee; it’s a ritual that wakes me up and gives me time to gather my thoughts about what I need to do for the day. Now if I’m not leaving the house for the day I usually don’t bother with shower as no one will see me so it doesn’t matter. I absolutely cannot leave the house without having a shower though. I would feel grubby and horrible and while I probably wouldn’t stink because my clothes are clean, I would be miserable for the entire day. I don’t think means it I’m a slave to products that some critics would say – I’m perfectly happy to leave the house without makeup which I do quite frequently.
Feeling clean, scrubbed and smelling of raspberry cake or cookies as I step out of the house is very much a part of who I am. You’ll never find me camping, backpacking or doing any activity where a decent clean shower with hot water isn’t available on a daily basis. Being clean and smelling good is where my confidence comes from and that will never change.
So how often do you wash and when? Do you have the kind of hair that can go a few days without getting greasy? I’d love to know!
