Annabella Asks: How often do you take a shower?

Jun 9, 2013 Bath & Body, Beauty Bits 37 Comments

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT: According to the Daily Fail there is a disturbing new trend for people to wash only a few times a week! Whilst this isn’t ground breaking news I got to thinking how important is my daily shower?

Americans vs. Europeans

When I first moved to the UK 17 years ago, I was living in halls of residence whilst on my HND course at the London College of Fashion. I used to get laughed at from my fellow floor mates with the amount of stuff I used to take into the shower. I had a plastic basket that contained the usual suspects like shampoo & conditioner, face wash, and shower gel but then I also had all my scrubs and moisturisers. As I got to know the other girls and guys on the floor they used to congregate in my room to look at all my bathing stuff with amazement.

There has always been a long-standing joke amongst Americans that Europeans don’t shower that often nor do the women shave their legs and armpits. Whilst I didn’t see that any of the girls looked like Chewbacca, I did realise they didn’t shower as often as me. While I’m not religious I think the daily shower comes from a Puritan belief of ‘Cleanliness is Next to Godliness’. As America was settled by a few thousand Puritans it might be the reason we are so obsessed with the frequent wash.

Showering in the morning is the same as having a cup of coffee; it’s a ritual that wakes me up and gives me time to gather my thoughts about what I need to do for the day. Now if I’m not leaving the house for the day I usually don’t bother with shower as no one will see me so it doesn’t matter. I absolutely cannot leave the house without having a shower though. I would feel grubby and horrible and while I probably wouldn’t stink because my clothes are clean, I would be miserable for the entire day. I don’t think means it I’m a slave to products that some critics would say – I’m perfectly happy to leave the house without makeup which I do quite frequently.

Feeling clean, scrubbed and smelling of raspberry cake or cookies as I step out of the house is very much a part of who I am. You’ll never find me camping, backpacking or doing any activity where a decent clean shower with hot water isn’t available on a daily basis. Being clean and smelling good is where my confidence comes from and that will never change.

So how often do you wash and when? Do you have the kind of hair that can go a few days without getting greasy? I’d love to know!

I have to shower at least once a day. I’m not a product junkie like you my dear, but I like nice smelling stuff. I have recently discovered the salux scrubby cloth thingy, and I love it!
I’ve had to learn over the years to be able to leave the house without showering when I go for my run in the morning. It felt a bit stupid to get up, shower, go run and have another shower lol.

I’ve never heard of the Salux but I think I’ve got something similar from Wal-mart that is quite rough and has handles on the side so you can properly buff your bod.

I’ll be starting the gym soon and I don’t want to shower twice like you said so I’ll be leaving the house unwashed so I better prepare my neighbours…

I have a shower every 4 months, whether I need it or not.

Hahaha, I love this! I’m one of those people who only shower every second day. I do wash myself with soap and water though, I just don’t step into the actual shower. My skin is dry and difficult enough already, a daily shower would just about ruin it. You’d never be able to tell though, as I smell absolutely lovely – I promise! 100% stink free! This would of course be a whole different story if I lived in a warmer climate – as soon as the weather starts to resemble summer I shower like a madman.

There’s never an excuse for B.O, though, honestly. You smell, you shower. End of story ;)

I think body odour comes from unwashed skin and unwashed clothes and the combination of the two are lethal. This is why I always carry a B&BW spray with me in my bag – if you stink on public transport you are getting sprayed! :D

OMG!! I almost spat my dinner out whilst reading this!! I bathe daily, some times twice a day. I cannot think of a day that I have not bathed or showered since I’ve been old enough to wash myself. Come rain or shine, wellness or illness and even with limbs in a cast I have insisted that I have access to a bath or shower.
I have had the ‘pleasure’ of knowing a woman who only bathed once a week!!

I would like to add that my skin and hair is super greasy so if I didn’t wash either one multiple times a day I would look insane!!

I don’t think I’d even consider that unless it was in Hawaii….

In winter I shower every second day. I do wash myself daily, just not always in the shower. It’s only in the summer, when the weather is very hot, that I need to shower every day. Sometimes, I’ll even shower twice a day if it gets really, really hot. Summers can be scorching here. Oh, and I do have a long bath every Sunday. I’ll just pour some salts or bath bombs in the shower and relax. It’s a pampering ritual I can’t do without.

It’s amazing what water can do isn’t it? I can imagine you laying the bath like a Roman Goddess – have you got your sexy servant men waiting to hand you a towel afterwards?

In summer,I shower everyday, sometimes twice a day. In winter, every second day, sometimes every day, depending on how my hair looks, which is REALLY greasy..I’d love to try those “dry shampoos” you have in Europe and USA , but we don’t have them here in Argentina..:/

I’ve got super greasy hair and I’ve tried dried shampoos but I didn’t like it. It worked really well with James hair because it’s short but it reminded me of a powdered wig! xoxo

Every second or third day, I blame the kids, the youngest is a rascal, I can’t leave her without adult supervision. As for hair washing I’d say once a week, to once a fortnight if I’m being extra icky.

Well you have gorgeous hair so it probably benefits from not being washed as often anyway. I can imagine having children would curtail regular bathing but I think enjoying and being with them is more important! xoxo

I wash my hair every second or third day and shower usually every other day, it really just depends on the circumstances though to be honest. In the summer I usually shower once a day just because I get overheated.

I have to shower everyday or maybe once in awhile I’ll skip one day but it’s so rare. I’m too oily both on my face and my hair to avoid the shower for any period of time, really. I like to shower before bed… Feels good to wash the day off and go to bed fresh :)

I agree with you Jen about showering before bed and feeling cool and fresh. But excuse the TMI but I sweat during the night and I just couldn’t wake up the next day without showering again.

It’s good to see you again! xoxo

This is definitely cultural! Japanese people LOVE being clean, and we definitely wash ourselves at least once per day. On the other hand, many Japanese people shower in the evenings. My parents (and most other people in their generation) cannot understand how people could go to bed without being completely clean!

If I was full on grubby I would wash before bed and then again in the morning. But I don’t do many activities that warrant bathing before bed. Nottingham as a city doesn’t feel that polluted unlike when I live in London. I sometimes showered twice a day when I lived there I always felt dirty! xoxo

I cannot imagine showering less than once a day either! However, it may have something to do with the fact that I live in a hot and humid tropical climate. Also, I shower in the evenings rather than in the mornings. Like K has said, I cannot imagine going to bed without being completely clean.

Wow after reading all these comments it really shows how where you live dictates how often you shower. The hotter it is the grubbier we feel!

Normally I shower twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.
Sometimes when I stay home the whole day, I will skip the morning shower and take the night shower earlier in the evening or afternoon.
Just like you I cannot leave the house without a shower. Something else that I can’t do is go to bed without feeling clean, it just feels wrong to me.

Wow Mesprit you must get through a lot of products but I completely understand. Feeling clean gives you more confidence and you don’t realise that until you can’t have a shower! :D

If I had a shower like the one show on the photo above, I would shower every minute of the day☺☺☺

Showers should be at least once a day. Never mind the baths.

Europeans shower once a day like you do, but we prefer to shower at night, because during the day you sweat and everything, there is pollution, it just make more sense to shower at night, we don’t want to be dirty in our bed.. This is the only difference…

Hi Lorene – thanks for your comment and I wish I could be happy to shower at night but I would still take another one in the morning.

I shower 2-3 times a day, most Asians shower at least twice a day.
I live in a tropical country so it makes me sweat and feel sticky.
Personally, I love showering, I don’t like B.O at all.I don’t want to annoy people with my uncleanliness.
My family always get annoyed if I don’t shower twice a day because they think it’s unhygienic.
Anyway, I was shocked when I read that some people only shower several times a week :):)

Thanks for your response DeeDee. Where do you get the time to shower 2 – 3 times a day? Sometimes I can barely fit one in but I work from home so don’t get that dirty – at least I don’t think I do! :D
